One of our favourite places to visit when we are at Hollywood studios is the Magic of Disney Animation. Not an exhilarating ride or fabulous show but a nice quite hour to cool down and recharge. The kids will love it and you can leave with a very personal souvenir. Perhaps the best time to go is just after the 3 0’clock parade, unless you’ve been lucky you will have been standing in the sun for a while so a nice cool down is just about right.
Inside the theatre you are faced by the stage resembling an animator’s studio, you can really sit anywhere in the theatre, we’ve been several times and never has it been full. Introduced by a Disney illustrator you are shown how the film process is completed, using Mushu the dragon from Mulan as an extremely willing and lively accomplice. This light hearted look at how Mushu was created lasts for about 20 minutes then you move through displays of animation to a hall which will have some of the Disney characters situated for autographs and photos. I’m sure the characters change so no guarantees but Mr & Mrs Incredible and Mr Frozone are known to hang out here.
While we were there last Mickey in sorcerers apprentice get up also made an appearance. But the best part is the area for you and your party to become budding illustrators, to the corner on the first level you will see a small waiting area with double doors leading to a small studio. Again a Disney illustrator awaits your arrival, take your place on one of the desks with paper and pencil attached. The room only contains 20 or so desks but they have a few seats at the front with boards you can put on your lap.
Under the illustrator’s careful tutelage you will replicate the chosen Disney Character using simple variations on circles. Now unless you are rather adept at drawing you will not be head hunted onto the next animation feature team, but your creation will have some resemblance to the character. Kids will love it because they have created something Disneyfied and parents will love it because they have spent most of the last hour in quite air conditioned environment. Don’t forget to collect an elastic band and bag from the shop as you come out as you don’t want to ruin your masterpiece during the rest of your day at Hollywood.
