No matter how much you enjoy the theme parks in and around central Orlando, there comes a time for most people when they just feel like doing something else. One of the nicest, most enjoyable, laidback experiences we have found was the sunset festival at Clearwater Beach.
Old and young alike can enjoy the many attractions which are all free.
The 1050 ft long Pier 60 is a fishing pier complete with bait house where every night between 6pm and 10pm people flock to join in the celebrations and watch the magnificent sight as the sun sinks into the Gulf of Mexico. You can watch this breathtaking sunset from the pristine white sand beach and observe couples of all ages holding hands mesmerised by this wonderful site.
The pier is host to the multitude of artisans and crafters who offer beautiful handmade items for sale. Among the offerings are jewellery, paintings, decorative items, candles and much, much more. If you are looking for unique gifts or souvenirs, this is the ideal place. Unusual items abound. We collect decorations for our Christmas tree from all the places we visit and at Pier 60 I found my favourite – a starfish painted to resemble Elvis Presley, complete with Tennessee silver Dollar around his neck.
For those of you who enjoy craft fairs, beautiful handmade treasures, and finding just the right gift for those who had to stay at home, this is just the place for you.
As well as the artists on the pier, there are numerous street performers doing what they do best - entertaining. The mixture includes live music flowing from the Pier 60 Pavilion, magicians, performing dogs, face painting, acrobats and jugglers.
After the sun has set, why not round off the day with a delicious meal in one of the many restaurants available to suit all tastes.
It is about one and a half hours drive from Orlando, depending on your starting point and traffic. If you plan to go to Clearwater, the journey is easier Monday to Thursday as the locals as well as tourists head there at the weekend.
