Being located around 70 miles from Orlando, Daytona is only around and hour and a half away and an ideal place to spend a day out away from the parks of Orlando. My first trip to Daytona was back in 1996 and not a lot has changed since then. Finding the beach at Daytona is one of the easiest places to drive to in Florida, just head East on the Interstate 4 and you will arrive right on the beach.
Most people will associate Daytona with the Indy 500 series that uses the large banked circuit. Large groups of bikers and car enthusiasts can be located here (as it is a bikers and car lovers paradise).
In Daytona there are many restaurants that offer great steaks and sea food. There is a real international feel to Daytona with many different cuisines to choose from. When I initially went to Daytona I ended eating in a Japanese restaurant where they cooked all the food right in the middle of your table. The chef even kept any unwanted food in bowl on his head!! When visiting Daytona it is a must to eat there before you return to Orlando in the evening. Prices for food were a little more expensive than in the Orlando area, but it is well worth it.
One of the activities I ended up doing while there was to hire a quad bike on the beach. Where Daytona beach differs from others in Florida (especially the ones on the west coast) is that cars and bikes are allowed to drive down the middle of it. Don’t let this put you off as it is very nice to be able to park up the car, pull out a nice hamper of food and sit on the beach. You are allowed to take the bikes all the way up and down the beach and in the 2 hours we covered quite a distance. Hiring quad bikes costs around $40 for the 2 hours.
Another place to have a look at is the famous race circuit. Here you will find the NASCAR museum and see many old race cars and memorabilia. Cost for the museum was about $12 the last time we were there.
If you are not into cars and racing why not take a trip to the pier where you can ride on the skywalk chair. This ride goes out past the pier and gives you some great views of the beach and pier.
If you are after a day out away from the hustle and bustle of Orlando parks, why not have a look at Daytona. It is an easy place to find and has plenty of great places to eat. The beach is a great way to have a picnic, just remember to move the car when the sea comes in!
