Comic books - Orlando / Florida Guide
Florida Guide > Miscellaneous
As we all know America is the home of the comic book, Marvel, DC, Superman, Batman etc, and the spin off movies become bigger and better with X men and the Avengers. Florida has its fair share of comic book fairs and conventions which attracts many visitors. But outside of these fairs and conventions there are plenty of stores to cater for the mildly interested, all with a vast array of new and historical comics. Our personal favourite store is the Coliseum of Comics, which has three stores in the Orlando area. The stores are situated in mall areas so if you’re planning a shopping expedition you really don’t have to stray far off line to find one.
The Coliseum of Comics also has sections for gamers, that’s Dungeons & Dragons board play rather than computer type games. But I don’t think anyone would be planning a trip to Florida to take part in a Dungeons & Dragons open tournament or at least if they did they would already be aware of where to go. It is the comics that attract us and we always arrange a visit or two during our vacation but given the amount of stock these stores carry we do set a time limit. With used comics on sale at 50c upwards you don’t have to break the bank and you can come away with some that you would have to pay an awful lot more for in the UK.
For those more interested they carry comics dating back to the fifties and with prices in the $100s you have to be a lot more interested. At the time of writing the Coliseum of Comics continue to have a promotion on a Wednesday, titled free comic Wednesday. It’s been the case for a couple of years now and requires no voucher simply appear in the store on a Wednesday and you can select four comics from the clearly identified boxes for free. Wednesday is the day most publishers produce their weekly publications so offering free comics is a way of attracting customers who will see the shiny new publications. However you are not required to make a purchase and you will have 1000’s to select from. Clearly as this is a promotion it can be varied or removed at any time.
A word of caution individual comics do not have a great weight but, speaking from personal experience, 50 comics can put your baggage over the weight limit when you get to the airport!
