CAMPING
Pitch a tent, set up that camper, enjoy private wooden sites in a variety of campgrounds that overlook scenic lakes. Campgrounds offer a range of amenities that may include hook-ups, full-service bath facilities, bait, recreation rooms, basic supplies and swimming beaches. Campground guests may find access to the Boundary Waters, nearby hiking trails and saunas.
A short walk or paddle can get you into a blueberry or raspberry patch. Dozens of area trails wind underneath a canopy of pine, fir and spruce trees. Trailside ferns and wildflowers line the path, and pine needles carpet the way. In the fall, the rolling green terrain is colour-washed in gold, yellow, orange and russet. Nature-viewing opportunities are abundant. If you prefer a different view, take an amazing pontoon boat tour of the area.
ACTIVITIES
The Ely area offers four seasons of trail experiences. Select an easy jaunt at the edge of town or a multi-mile trek in the wilderness. Spring and summer provide hikes along verdant forest trails and by sparkling lakes and streams. A hiker during breakup will see the opening of the waterways and the first wildflowers of the year.
The forest provides cooling shade and a harvest of wild berries on summer hikes. When the colour arrives in fall, the forest begins to open up so hiker can see deep into the woods. The Ely area lends itself to some of the most incredible photographic opportunities: picturesque lake views, northern lights, wildlife, wildflowers, and birds.
Birds are prevalent in the Ely area and the Superior National Forest depending on the season and the habitat. Approximately 155 species of birds make their home in the forest.

The area offers many opportunities for biking with routes to suit various skill levels and interests. Biking affords the possibility of spotting wildlife and the area is known for fabulous photography. Day canoe trips are very popular and easy to plan. Each trip affords a different type of experience designed for your specific style.
Begin or end your day with a sunrise or sunset cruise on Highway 1 or the Echo trail.
