Cyprus might be better known for its beaches, but there is actually an array of outdoor activities to enjoy. For those with an adventurous streak, here’s how to get your pulse racing while admiring the beautiful countryside.
Cycling
The versatile terrain and rare headwinds make Cyprus perfect for novice and more experienced bikers. . For the experienced biker, there are also lots of international cycling events here throughout the year, including the Cyprus Sunshine Cup and the Akamas Mountain Bike Challenge.
Rock climbing
there are climbing sites, where beginners are given a quick introduction of the basics and can then tackle heights between five and 50 metres. If you’re an experienced climber looking for routes off the beaten track, climbing clubs have tips on where to find your own unguided challenge.
Hiking
Cyprus offers 200km of purpose-built tracks across nearly 50 nature trails, signposted with information about the flora and fauna en route. Hiking in the Troodos Mountains is popular all year round due to the altitude – in summer, you can escape the scorching heat, while in winter the mountains are covered by snow. A leisurely walk is the 3km Caledonia Falls Trail, which ends with an impressive waterfall.
Horse riding
In spring, autumn and winter, you can ride at any time, but during the summer rides take place at sunrise and sunset. A great way to see the mountains, valleys, forest tracks and villages.
Skiing
High up in the Troodos Mountains, there' s a ski centre open in the winter months. At 2, 000m above sea level on Mount Olympus, you’ll find the Ski schools are available for beginners, while the more experience can try a cross-country ski track.
Golf
There are three 18-hole courses of international standard on the island, , which will include the rebuilding of the greens and bunkers.
Tyrolean traverse
Tyrolean traverse is an ancient method of crossing a large open space by attaching a rope between two fixed places, which will often be high up and over water. Head to the village of Kyperounta, where you can try this in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains.
Yoga
There are lots of places to try yoga in Cyprus. , organised lessons on the beach, classes in a traditional Cypriot village in the countryside. Also try a yoga retreat, such as those on offer, where you’ll stay in Mongolian Yurts and silence is encouraged from the moment you arrive.
