The last time I played Celebration I shared the practice ground with ‘Grip it and Rip It’ big John Daly. He was practising in bare feet and was whacking it twice as far as me, and dead straight, while talking to me over his shoulder. Just shows that form is temporary but class is permanent. A really nice guy to talk to and full of self-humour.
We couldn’t have had a better day to play Celebration, one of the great treasures of Central Florida. It was early April and the day was sunny and warm but not too sticky. It was late afternoon and the shadows accentuated the contours wonderfully as we meandered around this masterpiece of golfing design.
For those of us for whom the number of shots is only one part of the enjoyment of round of golf, Celebration is a wonderland of treasures. Smelling the flowers is just one. The wildlife is another. The natural terrain and so on…. .
I cannot recommend Celebration highly enough to any golfer wanting a great experience. My only word of advice is to book in advance and use whatever skills you have to negotiate a good deal, including discount vouchers from either Edwin Watts or Golfsmiths, as the green fees for walking in are quite a lot higher. So, you have arrived………what is in store for you?
It starts from your arrival and being met by smart, well turned out staff who help with everything. The pro shop is well stocked and the café is ready and waiting for those famous chilli-dogs and bottomless cups of coffee.
The starters are full of fun and they are careful to ensure you understand every nuance of the course, their suggested method of traversing the course and how to use the electronic gadgetry in the carts that visitors from outside the States find to be normally quite bemusing.
The water features are there for a reason other than just looking good or as a habitat for the local wildlife. Being too wary of them forces you away from them and you can easily find yourself playing your next shot from a position where the water is twice the previous danger. It pays to plot your way around with respect and distain in equal measures for the water hazards.
The greens are excellent and well maintained as is the total course and credit must be given to the course superintendent for a good job well done
The course is a delight and is an ever changing challenge from hole to hole and tests every club and every shot you have in the bag. It also tests some shots you didn’t know you had in your bag. But it does this in a polite and encouraging way that makes you want to return to gently try your hand again at challenging its layout and splendour.
