During the overview article on Hollywood Beach, we touched briefly on Arts Park at Young Circle. However, this wonderful waterfront park, deserves a longer look.
During the first decade of the 2000s, no less than 5 million dollars has been ploughed into this park to turn into one of the leading arts centres in Florida.
This now provides peforming and actual arts at low or no cost for residents and lucky holiday makers.
It is most famous for displaying the works of Risuko Taho a well respected Japanese artist but also displays the work of many contemporary artists.
Taho' s Water/Dream wave sculpture is particularly impressive and he also is responsible for what are known as Harmonious Events.
I particularly like Vanishing View by Alison Sky. Try to see this in day light and at night when it is lit to provide a stunning effect.
There is an interactive play area, evening concerts and special events held on its 10 acres. The open theatre has seating for 500.
Particularly impressive is their array of free nightly events. Every friday, from 8 p. m. there is a free movie under the stars (bring a chair or rug)
Friday is also the night to take your children for face painting, bouncy castle and a visit from a clown.
On monday nights (from 5. 30) around 20 food vendors arrive for an open air picnic. Again, take a chair or rug with you.
It is always wise to take some insect repellant with you during the summer months when the little blighters come out to snack.
Every year they host an Ocean Dance performance that has attracted artists like Mikhail Baryshnikov.
It is difficult to tell you about the ever changing special events but recently they had an interactive concert by The Florida Youth Orchestra, Golf for Art and Don Lambert' s Lawn Jobs. Check with the park to see what is on whilst you are there.
The Arts and Culture Center Building dates from the 1920s and is built in the pleasing Meditteranean Revival style. The building was restored 5 years ago to bring it back to its' former glory.
If you are visiting on the 3rd sunday of any month, then you will gain free entry to the center and this is also their family day with lots of interactive art fun for the children.
