Aldi has come to town! Aldi is a German owned supermarket that I have recently discovered the 9th biggest retailer in the world! The first store in Florida opened in 2008 and their hub is in Haines City.
For the benefit of our American members, Traders is also owned by Aldi and you may well have one of these in your home town.
I am sure that many of you have tried this brand; particularly since the recession hit and you will know that you can make considerable savings here.
It is, of course, warehouse style; no gimmicks or smart styling just goods piled high in an orderly manner.
The first thing that strikes you is that they have made their U. S. P. healthy brands. As you go round the store you will see the healthy eating flagged up on various goods.
The second thing is that you will not find your familiar Aldi brands. And also you will find that there is very little choice; just this brand of baked beans and this sort of porage and one sort of jam. Personally, I rather like that; you can certainly do your shopping in a fraction of the time when you are not sifting through dozens of the same sort of item. And you are not so tempted to put this or that extra little goodie in your trolley.
The fruit and vegetables are a nice quality and a very good price (just like the U. K) and the cold meats we bought were excellent.
The coffee was hugely cheaper and enough to make me swap brands and it was perfectly acceptable when I tried a cup later.
If our experience was anything to go by then do not expect great service from the staff. The check out operator chatted in Spanish to another customer throughout our transaction and managed to complete the whole process by just stating what we owed her. There was not one member of staff on the floor to ask for help.
I cannot say it is any better in England , however, and we have tried many branches over here.
To sum up, good quality food at great prices; if you can live without the trimmings and the lack of customer service Aldi may be just what you are looking for to trim those holiday expenses.
