Try Boggy Creek Airboat Rides - Orlando / Florida Guide

Florida Guide > Other Activities

One of the most exciting things to do in Orlando is visit the Boggy Creek Airboat Rides. For those of you who have never tried it, it is a bit like a very small hovercraft.

It is based in Southport Road, Kissimmee and is just a short drive from Orlando. The drive itself takes you through some lovely country roads that seem a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of Orlando. You will pass ranches that look like they have come straight out of an old western movie.

On arrival you will be booked onto the next boat leaving and it will not be a long wait as the trips only take 30 minutes. But, those 30 minutes will be the most exciting you have ever spent. You will hear them arriving with a great roar and when you are led down to the boat you will be supplied with ear defenders – you will need them! Each boat will hold seventeen people and will take you to territory unaltered by man into the Central Florida Everglades.

You will see the breathtaking beauty of the wetlands, cypress trees and wildlife in its natural habitat. The boat whisks across the water and marshlands at speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. You will go speeding through tall grasses and out onto the centre of the water where hopefully you will be able to get up close and personal with alligators of all sizes. The captain will slow down as they get near the areas where the alligators spend most of their time lazing on the edge of the water.

You will see more of them if you go at a time when it is not too hot, like early morning or dusk, they tend to stay under water in the heat of the day. The boat Captains are happy to wait while people take photos and they are a mine of information which they love imparting to all their passengers.

The best time of all to see the alligators is at night and at Boggy Creek you can go on an hours tour of the Everglades. If you want to go to the farthest reaches and are not afraid of the dark then you will find this fascinating. The alligators glide across the marshes seeking for their prey. The Captain of the boat wears a miners helmet which helps to seek out the red eyes of the alligators. It really is a mind boggling experience.
