When I saw an eatery called ‘Sweet Tomatoes’ was opening up I immediately thought of one of my favourite films ‘ Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Café’. This film was set in the 1980s, with flashbacks to the early 1900s. From England I found it a fascinating film and quite unusual to have ‘tomatoes’ in the title. Now a Sweet Tomatoes was opening up close to my villa. However, it is not like the Fried Green tomatoes served at the Whistlestop Café!
1978 saw the first restaurant in this group opening in San Diego, with steady expansion across the South East states, and now with 19 restaurants in Florida as I write. (If you have been to California you may know them as ‘Soup Plantation’ but in Florida they trade under the name Sweet Tomatoes. )
Open for lunch and dinner, our closest Sweet Tomatoes is located on H192 in the Rolling Hills area, on H192, close to the 429 Toll Road (often used as a short cut to some of the Disney parks from H27). They are open Monday through Thursday from 11am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 10pm, and Sunday from 9am to 9pm.
A relatively low cost meal, it’s ideal if you are looking for a lighter meal out and great if you have vegetarians in your family or group. (They will love the serving of wonderful fresh ingredients. ) There’s a long counter offering a vast selection from the large salad bar, plus various old family style soups on offer, including a soup of the day. In addition you can find hot pastas, breads and freshly baked pizza done on site. Add to the bakery muffins before you move on to their fruit and desert counter … and of course, there’s ice cream!
Each month there’s a special focus. For example it’s April as I write this and the ‘special’ ingredient is lemons. From refreshing tossed lemon salad, to lemon chicken soup. Then try lemon cream pasta and finish with lemon cream mouse – sugar free! And for those visiting after 4pm there is usually additional items so try out their delicious lava cake – hot lemon as it’s their ingredient of the month!
We thoroughly enjoy eating at this place, especially if we are looking for a ‘lighter’ meal in the US, enjoying the delicious fresh nutritious ingredients. And check out their website before you visit. Not only will you have their latest menu but can often find coupons.
