Whenever we vacation in Florida we make a point of renting a convertible during one of the weeks of our visit. This time I wanted to find something that was just a little bit ‘cooler’ than the usual offerings of various modified saloons. Having looked through the various options imagine my delight when I discovered that one of the convertibles offered was the 4. 6 litre V8 Mustang convertible. My memories of this vehicle stem from my childhood when one of my favourite Corgi models was the classically designed Mustang of the 1960’s. The vehicle then went through a variety of rounded/moulded transitions which, quite frankly, were very boring.
This all changed, much to every enthusiasts delight, with the introduction of the newest incarnation of this famous car. Ford have listened and the new Mustang presents classic lines with suitable chromed interior trim including neat round tunnelled instruments inspired by the original.
When we collected our car from the Kissimmee office we were presented with a car in the GT Premium guise finished in a tasteful light metallic blue with a contrasting beige electrically powered roof and matching leather trim. Having got the roof down on what was a beautiful sunny Floridian afternoon, one turn of the key initiated the sweet purr of the V8 engine. This engine has not been designed to be quiet. It is engineered to provide the driver with no doubt as to its capability and to ensure that anyone close by understands that this car is an extrovert. There was no doubt that the car had a presence on the street and definitely turned many heads. In this trim, complete with the all leather beige coloured trim, it had a very Aston Martin look about it too.
The Ford Mustang is not a car that is about comfort or practicality; it is simply built upon image, flamboyance and power (reflected in the horse logo). There are no ‘magic’ mpg figures either – you’ll be lucky if you achieve even 16 mpg. It seats 2 very well but is a squeeze in the back as my 2 teenage daughters would indicate – however they weren’t complaining as the cool image more than made up for it in their eyes. The excellent weather meant that the roof was almost never up except when parked so we all managed to get maximum use out of the open top motoring experience. Only the longest of journeys require the roof to be closed when it can get quite windy and very noisy.
The only draw back was that a week was simply not long enough to enjoy this car. We will definitely be renting another one on a future visit.
