Canoe Escape is located in Thonotasassa Florida approximately 1 hour from the Theme Parks area or Sarasota.
The canoe adventure lasts for anything from 2 to 8 hours and allows you to paddle down the Hillsborough River.
The headwaters of this river is in Green Swamp and eventually tips out into Hillsborough Bay and goes through Pasco, Polk and Hillsborough Counties.
The reddish/ brown colour river is no cause for concern since it is caused by rotting vegetation and leaves.
Canoe Escape rent out kayaks as well as canoes and you can experience this as a self guided tour or take a interpretive adventure.
If you choose to take the guided tour then you will be accompanied by an experienced guide who will point out things of interest.
3 or more in your party and you will be charged $75 per person and this includes the services of your guide. These tours normally take place on wednesdays at 11 a. m. but if you call the company at least 48 hours ahead of time it is possible to arrange other days.
Those of you that are happy to go it alone will be taken to the start point and given a river map. If it is your first time then a little instruction will be given.
You can expect to see a wide variety of wild life during your paddle. These will probably include turtle, heron osprey, turkey, vultures and surprise, surprise the ubiquitous alligator.
You may also see egret, hogs, limpkins and barred owls and rather less often wood cock, American robin and Florida banded water snake. You will be glad to know that the latter is one of Floridas non dangerous snakes.
The company suggest you bring the following items with you: water, snacks, sun screen, sun hat, sun glasses, dry bag and camera. Also wear comfortable foot wear that you do not mind getting wet.
During some months of the year they hold occasional Moonlight Trips. These start before dark and take you 5 miles down the river from Trout Park Place to Rotary Park. This takes 3 to 4 hours and costs from $60. Included in this trip is hire of the canoe, guide, shuttle, paddling gear, seat backs, coffee and dessert.
This company has the most apt name in Florida since a lazy day paddling down a river is the perfect antidote to the excitement of the parks.
