Things to do in California:

San Francisco

  • California is one of the most popular destinations in the USA.
  • San Francisco has the famous Alcatraz prison which is a must see. Park rangers give a fascinating tour into the amazing history of the island prison. Residents include many famous people like Al Capone.
  • Chinatown is a big neighbourhood in San Francisco and well worth a visit.
  • Fisherman's Wharf has open seafood markets, restaurants and street performers.
  • The Golden Gate Bridge is famous round the world. It stretches 4200 feet and is as tall as a 65 storey building.
  • Union Square is a haven for shoppers, is near the theatre district and has all kinds of shops - from large department stores all the way to individual boutiques.

Los Angeles

  • Los Angeles has enough to do to pack any vacation.
  • Disneyland in California is situated in Anaheim and was Walt Disney's original theme park. It's split into several areas: Disneyland Park, Disney's California Adventure and Downtown Disney. Disneyland Park is divided into areas: Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Frontierland, Critter Country, New Orleans Square, Adventureland, Mickey's Toon Town and Main Street USA. Disney's California Adventure is a newer park and is similar to MGM Studios in Walt Disney World in Florida. It features the following areas: Paradise Pier, Golden State, A Bug's Land and Hoolywoord Pictures Backlot.
  • Universal Studios Hollywood includes a backlot tour of old film sets and several rides themed around the movies. Newest attractions include Revenge Of The Mummy - The Ride and Van Helsing: Fortress Dracula.
  • Knott's Berry Farm was once a working farm but is now a popular theme park and features GhostRider - arguably the world's best wooden rollercoaster, the Xcelerator - one of the best launch coasters and Supreme Scream - a Tower Of Terror like ride where you are raised 30 stories up and dropped in three seconds!
  • Six Flags Magic Mountain is a short drive north of Los Angeles but is well worth the trip if you like roller-coasters - it's coaster heaven and is home to some of the most cutting edge coasters in the world!
  • The Getty Museum is a must on any trip to LA. It's situated to the north of the city and has some of the most fabulous views over the LA basin. It's home to more precious works of art than anywhere else we've been to and is fascinating. The buildings themselves are a work of art.
  • The Queen Mary in Long Beach is a floating hotel and museum. For a modest entrance fee you can do a walking tour of the ocean liner and get to see the many art-deco rooms that were once the utmost of luxury in Atlantic travel.
  • For the best in shopping we would recommend The Grove mall near Beverley Hills or Santa Monica and it's pedestrian 3rd Street Broadway. Here you will find all the best in shopping and dining.
  • Los Angeles Zoo is home to more than 1200 animals and is well worth a visit.

Other things to do

  • Yosemite National Park is a must see. It is home to three of the world's ten tallest waterfalls and the largest piece of exposed granite - the "Half Dome". The views are spectacular!
  • Hearst Castle in San Simeon has just got to be seen. It took 28 years to complete and is part of William Randolph Hearst's amazing estate. It contains 165 rooms on around 125 acres and is one of the most lavish houses you will ever see. Guided tours are available.
